![]() ![]() The only time she seems focused is when she is angry. ![]() Kelly Overton plays Vanessa Van Helsing, and she really has no personality or charisma. It is two steps forward, and one step back in every episode. Like most soap operas, the same characters make similar bad choices and dumb mistakes over and over again. These episodes develop the stories at a very slow snail's pace. If you like the main characters then maybe give it a go, if not I wouldn't bother. Also, the show just basically replaces the two main characters with younger versions in season 4 because why not? As for if I'd recommend it, maybe watch the first season a bit. There's a lot more tension in general in the first two seasons, by the second season you're pretty much never worried about the main characters for reasons which will become apparent if you watch. The vampires in the first two seasons (Dimitri and Aleera) were far more terrifying than the campy ones that are in the later seasons. Also, after all the build up of the Dark One, when you actually see it, it is soooo underwhelming. It seems like the show got more of a budget for season 4 so they started using more bad CGI and adding pointless side locations and characters for no real reason other than because they could. The show started to lose me in seasons 3/4, however. The show has a lot of good practical gore effects as well, although I think in the universe of Van Helsing people don't have spines because it is RIDICULOUSLY easy to cut off someone's head in this show, lol. The characters are interesting for the most part, although the main character Vanessa is by far the least likeable, though she gets a bit better by season 3/4. It starts out fairly grounded: a group of survivors have to make tough decisions to make it in a vampire-infested post apocalypse. Personal replies will not be provided. This show is all over the place in terms of writing and tone. Have a question? Email us at Please include your name and town. If the producers are most of the way through editing, though, we can at least hope for mid-fall instead of, say, late December. Syfy has said the show will be back "this fall," but that covers a lot of ground. That may be a less sexy update than "I'm not dead," but it's exciting in that it's the closest thing we have to a return date. The show's writers have also been sharing details of the third season's production on their collective Twitter account, saying that editing is coming along nicely. This is exciting news for fans, because it at least says that her character's not dead, which was far from certain by the end of season 2 (bearing in mind that "dead" is a relative term in a vampire show). ![]() We know this because star Overton posted a video on Instagram of herself in character, saying, "That's a wrap on season 3!" Vanessa, cleverly nicknamed Van so that the show can be called "Van Helsing" despite not featuring legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, will return in the third season. We can take the prophecies at their word, because they come from the show's writers as well as from Kelly Overton, also known as Vanessa Helsing herself. The prophecies say that Vanessa Helsing will rise again, sometime in the fall TV season (the prophecies are pretty light on details). ![]()
